Tenants enjoy the benefit of Holme Grown

E-mail Print PDF

The tenants and residents group of Holmclose, Holmfirth have taken the initiative to eat ‘Holme’ grown food.  They have shared seeds and excess harvest of rhubarb, cabbages and fruit tree cuttings.

Children have been encouraged to adopt their own vegetable to reconnect them with where and how food is grown. They are having fun especially Lewis Beaumont who has come up with an ingenious pest control plan… collecting snails for pets.
Mark & Lucy Ellis enjoy the fruits of their labours
The group’s treasurer Sarah Crabtree said “it is a great way to combat recession and I think everyone should be doing it”

How can we grow food locally?

E-mail Print PDF

Incredible Edible in the Golcar area has started growing raspberry canes and herbs on waste land. Local people have reclaimed land that was once outside toilets space and have had successful bean crops for 2 years. Now planting in alternative planters, bookcase, discarded wire shopping basket, paint tin and wheel barrow gradually involving neighbours and local people. While delivering posters they have been offered planting space behind a pub.

Maggie, Mo, Sally and MinnieWheel barrows full of eatable produce - broad beans, onions, kale, garlic and herbs - were pushed out and about on Golcar Lily Day to advertise an inspirational talk by Incredible Edible Todmordon (of River Cottage fame) on June 6th 4 pm at Colne Valley Garden Centre Golcar, organised by local people. Everyone welcome. There will also be a questionnaire for local people to inspire ideas in the Golcar area.
