Using horse and other herbivore manure on your garden

E-mail Print PDF

There has been considerable anxiety over the last year or so about manure contaminated with the herbicide aminopyralid, a hormone weedkiller. The PSD, (Pesticide Safety Directorate) have, at Dow´s request, suspended its licence to be sold while the whole matter is investigated. There is no suggestion of problems to human health, but manure from cattle or horses who have ingested the chemical, or even been bedded on straw treated with the chemical, has been reported to ruin crops in the garden and on allotments.

Seed and Seedling Exchange

E-mail Print PDF

We had a very successful Seed and Seedling Exchange/Give-away on Saturday 21st March, in the spring sunshine outside the Holmfirth Country Market. We gave away over 200 seedlings and packets of seeds, and held a raffle for gardening books and growing kits. Jo, Sarah, Norah and Sue send a big thank you to all the people who turned up to talk to us and take away ideas and plants for their own vegetable gardens; we are sorry if you did not get to talk to us individually due to the large interest in our stall but please do get in touch either through this website or through our forum to share your knowledge and help make Incredible Edible a success!

Thank you also to the Holmfirth Country Market who made us so welcome, especially Bob and Ann; and to Green Apple Organics and Poundworld in Huddersfield for donating plants and seeds.

We wish everyone good gardening this spring.

To encourage more people to grow their own fruit, Julian is hoping to develop a Community Orchard scheme, whereby community groups will undertake to create orchards in currently unised pockets of land. Any groups intereseted in taking part in the project, or who can identify suitable areas of land, should contact Julian.
